TRS-Care Help for Texas Teachers & Retirees
Left TRS-Care years ago? A limited re-enrollment window is open now — and premiums dropped for 2027. I'll help you compare your options, free.
What Is TRS-Care?
TRS-Care is the retiree health benefit program from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas for eligible public education retirees. The Medicare-eligible version coordinates with your Medicare Parts A and B. It's administered by TRS itself.
Important: I am not affiliated with TRS, and insurance agents cannot enroll you in TRS-Care. Enrollment runs directly through TRS. What I can do — free — is help you compare TRS-Care against your other Medicare options (Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D) so whatever you choose, you choose with the full picture.
Who Can Re-Enroll?
TRS opened this limited window for three groups:
- Eligible at retirement, but never enrolled. You qualified for TRS-Care when you retired but didn't sign up.
- Previously enrolled, then dropped it. You had TRS-Care and ended your coverage at some point.
- Surviving spouses and dependents of a deceased TRS retiree who was eligible.
What You'll Need
- Medicare Part B in effect (TRS-Care Medicare plans require it)
- Your Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) — the number on your red, white, and blue card
- A completed TRS-Care application
How to Enroll (Through TRS Directly)
Pick whichever is easiest for you:
- Online: through the MyTRS portal
- By phone/paper: TRS Health at 1-888-237-6762 (Monday–Friday, 7 AM–6 PM CT)
- Secure message: through your MyTRS account
2027 Premiums Dropped
TRS cut TRS-Care Medicare Advantage premiums by 27% for 2027 (per TRS board materials). The Texas Retired Teachers Association reports the monthly figures as:
- Retiree Only: $75 → $50/month
- Retiree + Spouse: $280 → $230/month
Monthly figures reported by the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA); 27% reduction from TRS July 2026 board materials. Confirm current premiums with TRS before enrolling.
Should You Re-Enroll? Let's Talk It Through.
TRS-Care at $50/month is worth a serious look — but "worth a look" isn't the same as "right for you." Your doctors, your prescriptions, and what you pay now all factor in. I'll compare TRS-Care against your current coverage and the other plans available to you, in plain English, with zero pressure. Then you decide — and if TRS-Care wins, I'll point you to exactly how to enroll through TRS.
