Medicare Advantage Plans in Central Texas

One plan. Hospital, medical, drugs — and often dental, vision, and hearing too. Let's find the Advantage plan that fits your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget.

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) is an alternative way to get your Medicare coverage. Instead of Original Medicare, you join a plan offered by a private insurance company that Medicare approves. The plan covers everything Original Medicare covers — hospital stays (Part A) and doctor visits and outpatient care (Part B) — and most plans add prescription drug coverage (Part D) plus extra benefits.

Common extras in Texas Advantage plans include dental cleanings, vision exams and glasses allowances, hearing aids, over-the-counter allowances, fitness memberships, and transportation to medical appointments. Extras vary by plan and county.

What to Compare Before You Choose

The $0 premium you see advertised is only part of the story. Here's what I walk through with every client:

  • Your doctors and hospitals. Are they in the plan's network? This is the number-one thing to verify — networks change every year.
  • Your prescriptions. Are your drugs on the plan's formulary, and what tier are they on? Two plans can price the same drug very differently.
  • Total yearly cost. Premium + copays + the plan's maximum out-of-pocket limit. A $0 premium plan with high copays can cost more than a plan with a premium.
  • Extra benefits you'll actually use. Dental, vision, hearing, OTC allowances — nice to have, but they shouldn't outweigh network and drug coverage.
  • Plan stability. Carriers adjust their plan lineups every year. For 2027, several major carriers are making significant changes — another reason to review, not auto-renew.

HMO vs. PPO — What's the Difference?

HMO plans generally cost less but require you to use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network (except emergencies), and you usually need a referral to see a specialist. PPO plans let you see out-of-network providers — you'll pay more, but you have the freedom. If keeping a specific specialist matters to you, this distinction matters a lot.

Don't auto-renew blind. Every fall your plan sends an Annual Notice of Change letter. Premiums, copays, drug tiers, and networks can all change January 1. Bring me your letter and we'll read it together — free.

Comparing Advantage vs. Medigap?

Many of my clients weigh Medicare Advantage against Medigap (Medicare Supplement). Advantage usually means lower premiums with networks; Medigap usually means higher premiums with broader provider access and more predictable costs. There's no universally "best" choice — there's only the best fit for you. That's exactly what a free plan review is for.

And don't forget your prescriptions: most Advantage plans include drug coverage, but if yours doesn't — or you're on Original Medicare — you'll want a standalone Part D plan.

Medicare Advantage Questions, Answered

What is a Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies. It bundles your Part A hospital and Part B medical coverage into one plan, and most plans include Part D drug coverage plus extras like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits.

How much do Medicare Advantage plans cost in Texas?

Many Texas counties have $0-premium Advantage plans, but you still pay your Part B premium, plus copays and coinsurance when you use care. Every plan has a yearly out-of-pocket maximum that caps your spending. Costs vary by county and carrier — I can show you exactly what's available where you live.

Can I keep my doctor on a Medicare Advantage plan?

It depends on the plan's network. HMO plans generally require network doctors; PPO plans let you see out-of-network providers at higher cost. Always confirm your doctors and hospitals are in-network before enrolling — it's the first thing I check with every client.

Should I choose Medicare Advantage or Medigap?

Advantage plans often have lower premiums and extra benefits but use provider networks. Medigap pairs with Original Medicare for broad provider access and predictable costs, usually at a higher monthly premium. Your health, doctors, prescriptions, and budget all matter — compare both with a licensed agent before deciding.

When can I enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans?

Most people enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period around age 65, or switch during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7). Certain life events can trigger a Special Enrollment Period. Call me to find out what applies to you.
